iCar - A Beetle in Apple's Bonnet?

Rumors are flying that one of Apple's next new products is an "iCar." Apple CEO Steve Jobs reportedly met with the head of Volkswagen, and the two companies are planning to discuss the idea further. An iCar is "highly unlikely," said Michael Ippoliti, research director for telematics and automotive at ABI Research. "I've had a good chuckle about this," he added.

The rumors are running wild about Apple Latest News about Apple this week, as speculation Wednesday about a new iPod announcement gave way Thursday to rumors that the company is partnering with Volkswagen on a new "iCar."

Apple CEO Steve Jobs and Martin Winterkorn, chairman at Volkswagen, met in California recently, according to an Associated Press report. They plan to meet for further discussions, a VW spokesperson told the AP.

The logical conclusion is that the two companies could be collaborating on an iCar replete with Apple technologies.

Neither Apple nor Volkswagen could be reached for comment.

Maybe, Maybe Not

Of course, Apple has already been collaborating with Volkswagen -- among other auto manufacturers -- on iPod integration in cars, so only time will tell whether these recent discussions were actually about an iCar.

"Is it likely? Sure, but I wouldn't start counting my iCars until they're sitting on the showroom floor," Bryan Chaffin, editor in chief of The Mac Observer, told MacNewsWorld.

"My gut feeling is that the two company heads probably have met and discussed this sort of thing, but that doesn't necessarily mean an iCar is on the way," Chaffin added. "It could, but it might not."

Complementary Brands?

The two brands could be compatible. Ever since VW's resurgence with the new Beetle, there have been many comparisons made between that vehicle and the iMac, Chaffin added. "I think in some ways those two products did touch a similar nerve," he said. "A particular demographic might think nice, happy thoughts about such a vehicle."

Apple hasn't spent much time developing car-related technologies the way Microsoft Latest News about Microsoft has, Chaffin noted -- it doesn't have any code running automobile subsystems, for example, whereas Microsoft does -- so "I personally would love to see Apple actually do some of these things," he said. "I think it's a fantastic opportunity to work on interface issues."

Indeed, "I wouldn't put it past Apple," particularly because of Microsoft's long involvement already in the automotive arena, noted Mark Fitzgerald, automotive analyst at Strategy Analytics.

Human-Machine Interfaces

One of the big challenges in the automotive area right now is to develop human-machine interfaces that can safely link the driver to the vehicle, whether to type an address into a navigation system or to dial and talk on the phone, Fitzgerald told MacNewsWorld.

In-car voice recognition Get Automated Customer Contact Solutions Powered by West Interactive Latest News about voice recognition, which would probably be the ideal solution, has made some inroads, but "vehicles are noisy environments, with background noise from the engine, the road, the radio, the fan and conversation," he explained.

"That's a huge challenge for the auto industry, and Apple is absolutely the best at building human-machine interfaces for portable devices," he explained. "That thought process could be brought over to vehicle side as well."

Consumer Demand

While there would be considerable demand for better human-machine interfaces in cars as well as for audio and cellular phone service, there would be less demand for Web browsing, full e-mail Email Marketing Software - Free Demo or other features of the mobile office, Fitzgerald noted. "There would be a small, select market, but it wouldn't be for the average person," he explained.

Most cars already have at least an audio input jack for connecting iPods, he said, but "the next step will be controlling them through the vehicle, like from buttons on the steering wheel," he said.

Nevertheless, in general, with generation lead times much longer than those for personal technology, "cars will always be behind the tech trends," Fitzgerald pointed out.

'Highly Unlikely'

The rumors about an iCar may be captivating imaginations, but not everyone is convinced.

"I've had a good chuckle about this," Michael Ippoliti, research director for telematics and automotive at ABI Research, told MacNewsWorld. "I think it's highly unlikely."

Apple is a company that "everyone wants to emulate," Ippoliti noted. "They have the cachet and the coolness, they're delivering mass-market products that make bags of money, and they have enviable control over brand and pricing. Everyone wants a piece of that, particularly the car companies, which are all struggling a bit these days."

Just Another Rumor?

Every car company imagines that it is "the Apple of the car business," Ippoliti said, but "in reality, I don't think Steve Jobs sees himself like any of the car companies, except maybe BMW."

Apple likely does want to be involved with automobiles, but all rumors need to be taken with a grain of salt, Ippoliti cautioned.

"Three to four months ago there was a rumor that Apple folks were hanging around Mercedes, leading to speculation that Apple would be doing the entire entertainment system for the next Mercedes car," he said.

"This is just the same, but neither one is going to happen," Ippoliti concluded. "It's fun to think about, and I'm all in favor of the car companies learning from Apple, but there is not going to be an iCar."

Yahoo Mail adds text messaging feature

On Monday, Yahoo! expands its Web mail service into a "social communication" tool — adding the ability to send text messages to cellphones directly from e-mail. It has also tweaked the interface to make it easier for people to go back and forth between e-mail, instant messaging and text messaging. The Yahoo Mail update also adds more sophisticated capabilities to check maps, directions, hotel and travel information directly from the e-mail itself.

Say someone writes an e-mail suggesting a trip to San Francisco and dinner at a specific restaurant. Put your mouse over the address, and a pop-up window emerges with tabs for maps, calendar and travel information.

Yahoo says it is the first Web mail service to offer e-mail to text messages for free. It's performed by adding phone number information for the people in your list of contacts. Click on a name, type, and it goes directly to their cellphone. When they respond, the message shows up in your mailbox as an instant message.

Mike McGuire, an analyst for research firm Gartner, says the upgrade keeps Yahoo "on par or just a little bit ahead" of competitors.

"This is a realization that we don't just use e-mail to communicate anymore," he says. "We all now have cellphones and instant messaging, and both can do text messages. This is a valuable feature that enhances the platform."

The changes take the updated Yahoo Mail out of beta, or test, mode.

The text messaging will be rolled out in the next few weeks, and is available in the USA, Canada, India and the Philippines.

Om Shanti Om trailers now available !!!

Shah Rukh Khan's ambitious home production, Om Shanti Om slated for release on November 9, 2007 has started its first previews on television. The movie is directed by his successful director of Main Hoon Na, Farah Khan. It also is going to be the launchpad for many newcomers like Deepika Padukone (Prakash Padukone is her dad), Uvika (of the Zee talent show fame) and many others. It is being called a tribute to Bollywood, something that was also said of Farah Khan's previous directorial venture. Apparently, her devotion to Bollywood surpasses all other things in her life.

The USP of the movie is the "party song" which features 30 top Bollywood actors and reads like the who's who of the Hindi film industry.
Farah and Shah Rukh personally invited all the big actors of Bollywood and managed to shoot the song with 29 stars. This is the last song of the film. Om Shanti Om is based on the film industry and spans over two eras.

This will be the first time that Saif Ali Khan, Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt will be seen together on screen. Interestingly, Dharmendra arrived after these three finished their shoot, however when they saw Dharmji shoot, the three actors jumped into the frame and started dancing with Dharmji. Jeetendra shook a leg with his son Tusshar for the song. Mithun specially flew down to Mumbai from Hyderabad only to shoot for this song. This song will probably also mark the comeback of Karisma Kapoor to the big screen. She shot for her dance sequence after Tabu and Urmila. Sunil Shetty, who was the villain in Farah’s last film Main Hoon Na was slightly apprehensive as he was to dance after Govinda’s performance.

The list continues with Bobby Deol, Zayed Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Dino Morea, Ritiesh Deshmukh and Aftab Shivdasani. The female brigade was represented by Rekha, Shabana Azmi, Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta, Kajol, Priyanka Chopra, Shilpa Shetty, Lara Dutta, Vidya Balan, Juhi Chawla, Malaika Arora and Amrita Arora.

Rooney pays tribute to Rhys

ENGLAND soccer star Wayne Rooney and fiancee Coleen McLoughlin left a floral tribute to Rhys — in the shape of Everton’s famous blue shirt.

The wreath carried the Toffees’ crest and Latin motto — Nothing But The Best Is Good Enough — together with a message which read: “You’re in my heart, you’re in my soul.”

Croxteth-born Wayne, 21, who played for Everton before moving to Man Utd, also left a card pinned to the flowers with a message from himself plus Coleen and her parents, brothers and sister.

Everton striker James McFadden dedicated his Premiership goal against Blackburn to Rhys.

Rhys’s parents Melanie and Steve were at Goodison Park with son Owen to watch McFadden equalise in Saturday’s 1-1 draw. This particular incident has again brought into focus the widespread gang culture seen to be pervading English society in the last few years. Although, arrests have been made in the case but a key witness still remains undiscovered. Parents of the murdered youngster and the police have made appeals to all involved to come forward so that the guilty can be punished.

Cancer Update from John Hopkins

1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.

2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's lifetime.

3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumours.

4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastro-intestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction.

9. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications.

10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.

11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.

Cancer cells can be defeated in the following ways:

a. Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in colour. Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or sea salt.

b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soya milk cancer cells are being starved.

c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.

d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).

e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine. Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties. Water- best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrified and leads to more toxic buildup.

13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor ssence,Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the body's own killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.

Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, un forgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life.

1. No plastic containers in microwave. Use other options instead

2. No water bottles in freezer.

3. No plastic wrap in microwave.

Dutt out, Khan in?

While Sanjay got out relatively quitely in the early hours of the morning from Yerawada jail in Pune, Salman Khan will be waiting with bated breath to find out if he will be joining his one-time partner in jail soon. Salman's hearing in the chinkara poaching case today is about the appeal he had filed on being convicted in April 2006.

His lawyers have said that they have a strong case but if one remembers correctly, Sanjay Dutt's lawyers had also believed that he will be given bail.
This is what his lawyers had to say, “The court has initiated proceedings against the key eyewitness Gypsy driver Harish Dulani in this case, he went absconding right after giving his testimony. How can Salman be sentenced on the basis of the testimony of an absconder?” Salman's lawyers also say the forensic evidence found on the actor's car was inconclusive, and the case - registered under the Wildlife Protection Act - was filed by the police and not the forest department officials. But the Bishnoi community of Rajasthan - that played a major role in Salman's conviction - says the arguments aren't new. The Bishnois regard the chinkara as a sacred animal and this has made passions run strong among the community. They of course, are hoping that the actor gets his due punishment.

Indian Cricket League ropes in the stars

The Indian Cricket League has finally unveiled its lineup of contracted players. The names were announced by the League's Executive Board Chairman, Kapil Dev in Mumbai. There are 41 players from India including five former cricketers. Most notable among these, is of course, Dinesh Mongia, a player who many believe has long been sidelined by the Indian Cricket Board.

From Pakistan, the names include heavy weights like Inzamam, Imran Farhat, Razzaq and Mohammed Yousuf. Brian Lara had already confirmed his participation last month itself.

The two South African players are Lance Klusener, who is definitely past his prime and Nicky Boje, who is more famous for his controversial link in the match fixing scandals.

Although, the League has managed to get a sizable number of players on board, how effective it will be remains to be seen.

Apple's new iMac

The latest iteration of the Apple iMac comfortably straddles the worlds of consumer and business. The latest iMac doesn't fall into the pigeonholes of "business" or "consumer." Its aluminum and black appearance can work in the home, next to your iPhone, or in the office next to your Aeron chair. With its Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows compatibility, it is certainly the "computer for the rest of us,"

It has aluminum and glass front panels, polycarbonate black plastic on the back, and a sleek facade. These materials are being touted "more recyclable," and since the iMac now meets Energy Star 4.0 requirements, it's a "green PC" as well. Like the white iMacs, the new iMac is a design wonder: a sleek, suspended slab with just the power cord. What else is new? Its all new Bluetooth 2.0 wireless keyboard which allows you to carry the keyboard anywhere in the room and still be able to work. It looks fantastic, sets a design benchmark and with an OS that works on iLife and Windows, it gives you all the flexibility you need. Go check it out on apple.com.

60 Years Celebration

The 60th year of India's Independence was a year characterized by a growing sense of maturity. Television channels were not giddy with joy but rather sought to provide a glimpse of the days gone by and the days up ahead. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's speech was also marked by an emphasis on looking ahead to make the entire population a part of the current economic boom.

He praised the work of those who fought for India's freedom but said the country would only be truly independent once it had eliminated poverty. A military band fired guns and played the national anthem as the Indian flag was raised at the historic Red Fort in the centre of the capital. Hundreds of balloons in the colours of the Indian flag were released into the air. Amid tight security, Mr Singh said: "I assure you that for each one of you, and for our country, the best is yet to come."

As celebrations got under way across India, a huge security operation swung into action to thwart possible militant attacks. Aircraft and tens of thousands of security forces had been deployed to fend off what the government says are threats by al-Qaeda and insurgents in several states. In Delhi, around 70,000 policemen and paramilitary troops were posted at government buildings, diplomatic enclaves and main intersections. Four explosions rocked the north-eastern state of Assam hours before the celebrations began. No-one was killed or injured in the blasts. The police blamed the explosions on the separatist United Liberation Front of Assam (Ulfa) rebels, who have called for a boycott of the celebrations.

The festivities were also muted in many areas of northern India where millions have been affected by some of the worst flooding in 30 years. To herald the celebrations in both countries, Pakistan allowed 134 Indian prisoners to return home on Monday, with India reciprocating by handing over 72 Pakistani prisoners on Tuesday.

India win the England Test Series

It was only the third time in India's test playing history that it won a series in England. The scorecard could of course, have been better. But, who's complaining? Definitely, not the Indian team who in the recent past has surrounded with much controversy and an inability to win abroad. However, a coach-less Indian team seems to be doing much better when compared to its performance when being managed by a coach who nearly tore the fabric of Indian cricket apart.

It is a test that could probably be the swansong of the old guard and they have turned in a magnificent performance. Anil Kumble not only took a good number of wickets but finally achieved that elusive test century.

To be fair, the England team also put in a good show but at the end of the day, they are the losing side and that is how history will remember them. Fine performances notwithstanding, the Indian tigers were able to tame the English lions.

All in all, it has been a scorching summer for England.

Google phone to compete with Apple iPhone?

Google phone to compete with Apple iPhone Google appears to be at work developing a new Google phone, or GPhone, which will go up against the likes of the Apple iPhone.

The US search giant is creating a device that will be designed specifically to showcase Google applications such as its search engine, email and Google Maps. It will also allow it to tap into the mobile advertising market, which is due to take off in the next couple of years.

In January it emerged that Samsung Electronics had inked a deal with Google to launch the Google phone, while other companies such as Yahoo and Microsoft are keen to claim a slice of the mobile pie as well.

Reports suggest that the GPhone will feature a camera, built-in WiFi, 3G and GPS capabilities.

However, a spokeswoman for Google refused to confirm or deny the rumours, telling IT Week: "What our users and partners are telling us is that they want Google search and Google applications on mobile, and we are working hard every day to deliver that.

"We're partnering with carriers, manufacturers, and content providers around the world to bring Google search and Google applications to mobile users everywhere."

Eye Care Tips: Make Your Eyes Look Healthy and Beautiful

One of the most wonderful things in nature is a glance of the eye; it transcends speech; it is the bodily symbol of identity. Eye is cosidered to be an integral party of one's beauty and we at times completely ignoring taking care of it. Here are few healthy tips which will help making your eyes an asset to you whole of your life.

Some valuable Tips for Eye Care

1) All of us have tendancy of forming dark circles just under our eyes. You can fix these dark circles by putting just two slices of potato over your eyes for 20 minutes. Trust me, you will be glad with the results once you take off the potatoes.

2) Another technique to get rid of dark circles is by applying warm tea bags over your eyes for 15 minutes. This method works too.

3) After having a taxing day, your eyes get tired too like your body and mind. So do make it a point to refresh your eyes. For refreshing your eyes, try squeezing cotton pads out of ice water and place them on eyelids for at least 20 minutes. This will give a soothing effect to your eyes.

4) After regular work hours should be infused with short breaks. During such breaks, better to do a small and easy exercise: "First, blink your eyes several times. While you keep your eyes closed, roll your eyeballs both clockwise and anticlockwise and take a deep breath. Gradually open your eyes while releasing your breath. This exercise lasts for a minute and you can repeat it three times before getting back to work." It serves as a good workout for the eyes.

5) While working for long hours, look at distant objects either in your office or outside. Looking at a distant object and then returning to your task helps your eyes focus better. Try taking such visual breaks for about five to 10 minutes every hour.

6) Other traditional and well known remedy is to place cucumber slices on eyelids while relaxing in hot bath. This will be like pampering yourself to the acme, treating yourself like a queen.

7) To make sure your eye shadow last all day, apply a layer of concealer before applying eye shadow. Add a dash of mascara to your eye lashes to give final touch.

8) Last but not the least, dont forget to take off all the make-up from your face once you go to bed specially from and near your eyes.
